While cars have dominated the roads for most of automobile history, SUVs have a surprisingly storied provenance dating to before the Second World War. However, the "modern" SUV, one focused more on accommodations than rugged utility, didn't begin hitting its stride until the late-80s/early-90s, with the '84 Jeep Cherokee cited as one of the earliest examples.
